Machu Picchu and its neighbor Huayna Picchu were once populated and has significant religious and defensive purposes. When the Incans were threatened with extinction, the residents of Macchu and Huayna Picchu built a new sacntuary, Picchu Peaks. Here they again built temples for the Sun and Moon gods, as a reminder that life cannot exist without a balance.
